چکیده

machines that can interact with them as they interact with each other. Science fiction writers have given us these goals in the form of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey and Commander Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, at present, our computers are deaf, dumb, and blind, almost unaware of the environment they are in and of the user who interacts with them. In this article, I present the current state of the art in machines that can see people, recognize them, determine their gaze, understand their facial expressions and hand gestures, and interpret their activities. I believe that by building machines with such abilities for perceiving, people will take us one step closer to building HAL and Commander Data.

Towards Building User Seeing Computers

Of all human senses, vision is the primary source of information about the outside world. When humans lose a sense of touch or a sense of hearing, they can still communicate with each other using vision. The same is for computers. When information cannot be entered into computer using hands or speech, vision could provide a solution, if only computers can see. Based on our recent work on design...

Language learning on a next-generation service platform for Africa

Developing countries are seeing rapid growth in the deployment of mobile phones. Billions of people (including those in the poorest parts of the world) now have devices capable of communication and computation. In Uganda it was reported that there were 25 mobile phones per 100 people in 2007 [11]. This makes mobile phones the most ubiquitous computing and communication platform in the country c...

Auslan Sign Recognition Using Computers and Gloves

Wouldn’t it be great if computers could understand sign language (and Auslan in particular)? This would open the door for some interesting applications for both Deaf and non-Deaf people. We are seeing the development of interesting technologies for speech recognition, but no real commercial products for sign recognition. There are a number of commercial reasons for this (like the size of the ma...

Emily Balcetis Wishful Seeing : How Preferences Shape Visual Perception

People assume that they perceive the world as it really is. In this article, we review research that questions this assumption and instead suggests that people see what they want to see. We discuss classic and current research demonstrating wishful seeing across two perceptual tasks, showing that people categorize ambiguous visual information and represent their environments in ways that align ...

Perception, Mobility and the Affordances of Portable Computers: An Historical Epistemology of Mobile Computing

The interaction between humans and portable technologies, as a part of the broader problem of technology use in Human-Computer Interaction, has received considerable research attention and has been approached from diverse angles. The concept of affordance, drawn from ideas in the psychology of perception, is one of these angles. Unfortunately, most of these theories of perception which premise ...
